Too Few Teens and Youth Adults Using Opioids Are Screened for Hepatitis C and HIV, New Study Finds

Despite their increased risk, only one-third of adolescents and young adults with known opioid use disorder (OUD) were screened for hepatitis C, according to a study released at the IDWeek conference in San Francisco. Furthermore, of those screened for hepatitis C, only 11% were also screened for HIV.

Hologic's Global Access Initiative Increases Availability of Diagnostic Testing in Resource-Limited Countries

Hologic, Inc. announced today the launch of the new Hologic Global Access Initiative, in partnership with the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) and MedAccess (backed by the U.K. government), to increase affordable access to molecular testing for HIV, hepatitis B and C (HBV and HCV) and human papillomavirus (HPV) in nearly 50 nations around the world. These countries, primarily across Africa and Southeast Asia, make up 90 percent of the HIV disease burden globally.

FIND and DNDi support Malaysian MOH to simplify and decentralize HCV screening & treatment

FIND and the DNDi will partner to generate evidence that will support policy change and scale up of hepatitis C diagnosis and treatment. This work, announced at the AIDS 2018 conference in Amsterdam and ahead of World Hepatitis Day 2018, is being conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Health in Malaysia with a view to overcoming barriers to diagnosis and treatment.

Cost-effective universal screening for hepatitis C in France

The modeling results show that universal screening is associated with better life expectancy adjusted for quality of life than other strategies. Universal screening is cost-effective if the patients tested for HCV infection are treated rapidly after diagnosis.

EATG launches a report on access to HCV-related services in the penitentiary system in Europe

Drawing on research on the state of access to services related to Hepatitis C in prison settings in Europe and Central Asia, which has highlighted major shortcomings across the countries as well as some promising practices in few countries, the European AIDS Treatment Group calls on national and prison authorities to scale up access to voluntary and confidential testing and counselling for people in detention.

Acute HCV spontaneous clearance rates low among HIV coinfected

Most patients with HIV who become infected with hepatitis C will not clear the infection spontaneously and face a chronic course, according to a study presented at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, also known as CROI. The researchers advocate for amended direct-acting drug labels and guidelines to allow usage of DAA therapy during the acute phase of HCV in high-risk individuals.
